Forest Green Walk – Update
Our sponsored walk to Forest Green Rovers on the 7th April is getting closer and I’m here to give you an update on our progress.
A quick reminder on what we are doing and why. On Monday 7th April around 50 members of the Kidderminster Harriers Independent Supporters Trust (KHIST) will leave Kidderminster Harriers Football Club and walk the 65 miles to Forest Green Rovers FC in time for the Tuesday evening football match between the two respective sides.
We will set off from Aggborough at 6.30am on the Monday and walk towards Stourport before following the River Severn down to Tewkesbury. After 36 miles and around 12 hours walking I am sure we will all sleep well! If this wasn’t enough we will then walk a further 29 miles on the Tuesday to arrive at Forest Green Rovers in time for the 7.45pm kick off (hopefully).
We will be are doing the walk in memory of former KHIST chairman Steve Millington who sadly passed away in November after a short illness. Steve will be missed by everyone connected with KHFC and it was his wish that we raise money for Macmillan Cancer Support after the support that he received during his final months.
Words cannot do justice to the amount of time and effort that Steve put in to the formation and success of KHIST over the last ten years. The supporter’s trust has raised over £100,000 for KHFC and Steve was a key member in rescuing the club three years ago when in financial difficulties.
Although we walk in memory of Steve, one in three people will get cancer and it’s the toughest thing most of us will ever face. Macmillan provide fantastic practical, medical and financial support plus push for better cancer care.
Training is going well for the majority of our group who’s age ranges from early twenties to retirement age. Our number even includes KHFC legend MickTuohy. However I think with every practice walk that we complete comes the realisation of just how far we are all walking! This past weekend a group of us walked a total of 40 miles in preparation.
We have had a fantastic response to our walk and fundraising is going very well. We have smashed our original £10,000 target. Those taking part are giving up a lot of their time to do this walk in memory of a great man so please donate online if you are able to. This can be done by heading over to www.justgiving.co.uk/fgrwalkers or by texting the message KHFC65 and the amount to 70070. We will also be holding a bucket collection at the home game with Grimsby Town on the 5th April if you are unable to go online.
We are grateful to have received plenty of support from many local companies including HIRE IT!, Bengry Motors and Beakbane who have helped with travel and accommodation costs. We really appreciate all the support we have been given.
