Sponsored Walk Update

This time last year we were planning for the Forest Green sponsored Walk (pictured below) in memory of former KHIST chairman Steve Millington. Little did we know that the walk would be the success it was, raising nearly £40,000 for Macmillan Cancer Support. Many friends and memories were made along the way.

Forest Green Walkers

12 months on we once again are planning a walk to support a charity that has particular meaning to us. My co-organiser, Dave Pountney and his wife, Beckie, suffered the heartbreak of losing their baby, Charlotte May, who was born sleeping at full term last June. It is impossible to know the pain this caused not only Dave and Beckie, but also the rest of their family.

It was no surprise to me when Dave announced he was organising a charity walk this year to help raise monies for the charity that helped them so much after the loss of Charlotte May. The Harriers walkers from last year, quickly announced they were on board.

We are a special football club, with special fans. We know how to stick together and respond to financial crisis, like the one we experienced 4 years ago. But we also look after each other and that is why I am pleased and proud to be once again involved in this walk, that means so much to us all.

So where are we walking to you may ask? To the home of AFC Telford is the answer. A distance of 35 miles, is to be covered in one day. Harriers game will take place on Saturday 4th April, but we will start and complete the walk the day before, on Good Friday. After all we do want to see the match! The route will take us along the River Severn to Ironbridge and then on the road to AFC Telford. We expect to cover the distance in around 12 hours. If that is not punishment enough a number of the walkers will then play for the Harriers supporter’s football team against their Telford counterparts on Saturday morning!

As I write we have over 50 walkers signed up! What a response! Many are from last year’s walk, but we also have a number of people who are actively involved in our chosen charity, Towards Tomorrow Together.

We are looking to raise over £10,000 for our chosen charity. They offer invaluable support to families who lose a baby through pregnancy, during birth, or as an infant. The monies we raise will help the Worcestershire branch of the charity and give them the opportunity to help other families who suffer loss similar to Dave and Beckie. The money raised really will make a difference and help the charity expand their services.

It’s not too late if you wish to join us and we have a couple more ‘practice walks’ planned ahead of our April walk. Once again we will be advertising the walk in the local media. As I write we are still looking for a sponsor for our walk T-Shirt. If you would like to sponsor either the back or the front of the shirt, please give me a call on 07507 272579. Your support would be greatly appreciated and your logo will be on display for at least 12 hours!

The easiest way to donate is to go online at www.justgiving.com/walktelford. Or if you prefer you can text to, KHFC50 and the amount to 70070. Alternatively all the walkers will have sponsor forms and will no doubt be looking for support.

I know we will get a great response from Harriers fans, players and officials. You will be pleased to hear that at the moment there are no plans to show pictures of naked walkers in this programme or the local press like 12 months ago! However, if you don’t donate…..!!”

Thanks for your anticipated support.
