KHFC vs Stockport County – KHIST POTM Man of the Match – Vote Now!
Harriers did their bit on Saturday in the Blue Square Bet Premier title race as they beat Stockport County 4-0 at Aggborough, but Mansfield Town’s 1-0 win over Wrexham meant that the title headed to Field Mill and Harriers had to settle for a place in the Play-Offs.
Steve Burr’s men knew that they need to beat their visitors, thus sending the Hatters down to Blue Square Bet North in the process, and hope that Mansfield slipped up at home to Wrexham to have any chance of claiming automatic promotion back to the Football League. But after a fantastic season all-round, the route back to League Two now must be taken via Wembley.
Infront of a bumper last-day attendance of 6,453, Harriers’ biggest crowd for 19 years and the 7th highest Aggborough turnout of all-time, Anthony Malbon rifled in the hosts’ opener, a goal that sparked ugly scenes with a minority of Stockport fans encroaching onto the playing area and causing play to be halted for nearly half an hour. When play did restart, Malbon picked up where he left off and his left-footed shot put Harriers two goals to the good, the required margin of victory should Wrexham hold the Stags to a draw.
And it was one-way traffic soon after. A bealeagured County outfit couldn’t stop the Harriers onslaught and headed goals from Chey Dunkley and Martin Devaney sealed the win, although in truth Harriers could have netted more as Lee Vaughan, allegedly assaulted during the violence, missed a penalty.
So it’s the Play-Offs for Harriers who face a trip to Wrexham for the 1st leg on Tuesday evening before entertaining them at Aggborough on Sunday for the chance to play in the Promotion Final at Wembley on Sunday 5th May. But who was your star man at Aggborough on Saturday?
