Forest Green Sponsored Walk – An Update

It’s now just over a month since we revealed plans to walk to Forest Green Rovers before Harriers league match on Tuesday 8th April. Despite being over three months away we have been busy planning the event and I’d like to bring you all up to date.

We have had a fantastic response and already 42 walkers have committed to taking part in the two day 65 mile walk for Macmillan Cancer Support. We held a meeting a few weeks ago and have set an ambitious target of £10,000.

steve-millington-150-150We will of course be walking in memory of former KHIST chairman Steve Millington who sadly passed last month after a short illness. Steve was the driving force behind KHIST and it was his drive and enthusiasm that helped to rescue the club during its darkest financial days.

Myself and Steve visited Hereford only back in May to offer our support for the formation of the Hereford United Supporters Trust. Steve spoke at length at the meeting which was testament to the kind of person he was. He would do anything for anyone.

It was Steve’s wish that that we raise money for Macmillan.Macmillan_Logo He received tremendous support from this organisation and it is only fitting that we aim to raise a substantial sum of money for the wonderful work Macmillan do.

Macmillan are a registered charity. Their aim is to improve the lives of those affected by cancer. They provide practical, medical, emotional and financial support and push for better cancer care. One in three of us will get cancer. Two million of us are living with it. With the efforts of the walkers we can help Macmillan in their quest to further help all cancer sufferers.

The 65 mile walk will start from Aggborough Stadium on Monday 7th April at 7am with our large group largely following the River Severn route. After completing 36 miles we will stop overnight in Tewkesbury before tackling the final 29 miles and ‘that hill’ on the Tuesday.

Please give generously. This is a challenging walk by anyone’s standards. Please support the walkers and help us to achieve our target. If you are able to offer us any other support then please get in touch with me.

There are a number of ways you can donate. The simplest way is through the “JustGiving” page on the Macmillan website. This is simple, fast and totally secure. Here is the link..

We are extremely grateful to John Davies and his company HIRE IT! for their support that has enabled us to keep our accommodation costs down. We also appreciate John’s help arranging a coach to bring us all back as we didn’t fancy walking back!

We also appreciate the support of local companies Bengry Motors, Go Outdoors Kidderminster and Severn Gas Supplies for helping to keep ours costs down and thus maximising our fundraising.

We look forward to our first official ‘practice walk’ on Sunday 26th January. It’s still not too late to join us! Karl Davies will update you next month on our progress and plans.

Subject to the weather the fan’s football teams of Harriers and Hereford will have met this morning for the first time. All money raised will be donated towards our walk and Macmillan Cancer Support. Well done to both sets of players. More details can be found at www.harriersfansteam.co.uk
